What is the best way to choose a grid size for local rank tracking?

Grid size and point spacing decide whether your rank data reflects your customers or just your parking lot. Here is how to size a grid around real service areas and budgets.

Start from where customers come from, not from the map

A grid is a set of points around a location, each one a simulated searcher standing in a different spot and typing your keyword. The first decision is not how many points, it is how far out they should reach. That distance should match the area from which you actually win customers. A dentist typically draws from a few miles; a roofer might serve half a county; a downtown coffee shop lives or dies within walking distance. Pull the addresses of your last hundred customers or jobs and look at where the density falls off. That edge is your radius.

Owners often set the radius to match their ambition rather than their reality, tracking twenty miles out for a business that has never had a customer from more than six. The result is a grid full of red points that were never winnable, which hides the real story happening in the inner ring. How point count and spacing interact

Once the radius is set, the point count determines resolution. A 5 by 5 grid across a ten-mile radius puts points roughly five miles apart, which is coarse enough to miss an entire neighborhood where a competitor dominates. A 9 by 9 or 11 by 11 across the same radius shows block-level texture but costs many more checks per keyword per scan. The rule of thumb we use is that spacing should be tighter than the distance a customer would consider driving past a competitor to reach you. In a dense city, that can be under a mile. In a rural area, three or four miles is fine.

There is a diminishing return. Going from 7 by 7 to 13 by 13 more than triples the number of points, and beyond a certain density adjacent points return nearly identical results, because Google's location precision and the local competitor set do not change meaningfully block to block. Most single-location businesses get clear, actionable pictures from a 7 by 7 or 9 by 9 grid with spacing set by the density of the area. Shape the grid around real geography

Square grids are convenient, but customers do not travel in squares. If a river, a highway, or a state line cuts through your grid, points on the far side may be irrelevant. Some businesses serve a corridor along a major road, or a set of suburbs to the north but not the industrial zone to the south. Where your tracker allows it, move or drop points so that the grid mirrors the service area you drew from customer data. If it does not allow it, at least know which points to ignore in your reports.

The other geographic input is your competitors. Plot where the businesses that actually appear in the pack are located. If three strong competitors cluster on one side of town, that side needs more resolution because it is where rankings will be contested and where small gains matter. The side of town with no competition will show you winning at every point, which is pleasant but not informative.

Matching grid choices to keywords and budget

Not every keyword deserves the same grid. Your primary service keyword, the one that drives the most calls, justifies the densest grid and the most frequent scans. Secondary services can run on a smaller grid or a lower cadence. Branded searches barely need a grid at all, since you will rank for your own name nearly everywhere. Budget is usually measured in checks per month, and a check is one point on one keyword on one scan. When budget is tight, keep the grid honest and reduce cadence first. A 7 by 7 grid scanned twice a week gives a more reliable picture than a 5 by 5 scanned daily, because spatial coverage catches problems that frequency cannot. Revisit the setup every quarter. Service areas change, competitors open and close, and a grid built for last year's business may be tracking the wrong ground.
